Are Dog Nose Prints Unique? What the Research Says

Close-up of a dog nose showing its unique pattern of ridges

Short answer: yes. Every dog has a nose pattern of ridges and bumps that belongs to that dog alone, and it stays the same throughout its life. Researchers have studied it as a way to identify individual dogs, the same way fingerprints identify people.

What the research found

In 2021, a team of mathematicians and veterinary researchers in Korea published a study in the journal Animals testing whether the canine nose pattern could work as a unique biometric marker. They collected 180 nose images from 60 dogs of different ages, sexes and breeds, and examined them both by eye and with a matching algorithm.

They found two things:

  • Each dog's nose pattern was unique. No two dogs in the study shared a pattern.
  • The pattern did not change. Images of the same dog taken at different times matched.

They then repeated the analysis on a larger set of 278 images from 70 dogs across 19 breeds and reached the same conclusion. The authors note that this confirms earlier work by others. What makes up a nose print

Look closely at a dog's nose and you'll see a surface divided into small raised areas separated by fine grooves. The size, shape and arrangement of those areas, together with the shape of the nostrils, form the pattern. When a nose is pressed onto paper with ink, or photographed close up in good light, that pattern is what shows.

Are cat nose prints unique too?

Cat noses also have a pattern of ridges and bumps, and it is commonly described as unique to each cat. It has been studied far less than the dog nose, though, so the evidence is not as strong. What we can say from experience is that cat nose prints vary a lot from cat to cat, and a sharp close-up shows the pattern clearly.

Is a nose print the same as a paw print?

No. A paw print shows the outline of the pads, and paw prints from dogs of a similar size and breed can look alike. A nose print shows a pattern that is individual to one animal. We explain the difference in more detail in nose print vs paw print jewellery.

Why this matters for nose print jewellery

Because the pattern is unique, a piece engraved from your dog's real nose print can only belong to your dog. That is the whole idea behind our nose print jewellery: we work from the photo or ink print you send, never a stock pattern, so the ring, pendant or bracelet carries their actual print.

Quick answers

Are dog nose prints unique?
Yes. A 2021 study published in Animals examined 278 nose images from 70 dogs of 19 breeds and found each dog's nose pattern was unique and stayed the same over time.
Do dog nose prints change with age?
No. The same study found that images of the same dog taken at different times matched, so the pattern stays stable.
Are cat nose prints unique?
Cat noses also have an individual pattern of ridges and bumps and are commonly described as unique, but they have been studied much less than dog noses.
Can a nose print be used to identify a dog?
Researchers have tested nose patterns as a biometric marker for identifying dogs, in the same way fingerprints identify people, and found them reliable in their study.
